The EPVFD is a Bronx-based Volunteer Fire Department established in 1922 in the Edgewater Park community. The EPVFD is a 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to protect the lives and property of the residents of Edgewater Park. The Department’s motto is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” as it is a 100% volunteer organization and one of 9 remaining VFD’s still operating in New York City and the only Volunteer Fire Department in the borough of the Bronx.
Due to the unique infrastructure of Edgewater Park, the department utilizes specialized fire apparatus to navigate the narrow roadways of the community. Our first due fire apparatus is Engine 3, a 2002 GMC custom cab with over 500 gallons per minute with a 300-gallon reserve and 20-gallon foam. Engine 2 is the department’s second due fire apparatus and first due for EMS runs. Each of our pieces is fully equipped to handle the community’s needs independently if the occasion arises. Oftentimes, the EPFD is able to respond to calls within the community 5-10 minutes faster than city agencies due to our ability to navigate the community streets.
The Edgewater Park Volunteer Fire Department consists of 100% volunteer members responding to the community’s needs 24/7/365. Our department attends fire training in cooperation with fellow volunteer fire departments from the Volunteer Fireman’s Association of the City of New York. Many of our members are New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians. In contrast, others are certified in Professional Rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid through our American Heart Association Certified Instructors.
