The Volunteer Firemen’s Association of the City of New York (VFANYC) is committed to providing a website that people with disabilities can use. We are continually improving the experience for everyone and working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA.
Our current status
The website has received automated, visual, keyboard, mobile-reflow, and form reviews. A full independent conformance assessment with a representative range of assistive technologies has not yet been completed. We therefore do not claim that every page or third-party component fully conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
Measures we take
- Semantic headings and page landmarks.
- A skip link, keyboard-operable navigation, and visible keyboard focus.
- Text alternatives for meaningful images.
- Labels, instructions, and understandable errors for forms.
- Color, contrast, reflow, and enlarged-text checks.
- Captions or text alternatives for time-based media when available.
- Accessibility checks when pages and forms are added or changed.
The accessibility menu available on the site is a supplemental personalization tool. It does not replace accessible source content, keyboard support, meaningful alternatives, or human testing.
Known limitations
Some third-party videos, social-media embeds, maps, accessibility tools, and linked websites may not be fully controlled by VFANYC. Historical photographs, newspaper scans, maps, and documents are being reviewed; some older items may not yet have complete descriptions or text transcripts.
If a format prevents you from obtaining information or submitting a department interest form, please ask for an alternative. We can provide the relevant information or help route your inquiry without requiring you to use an inaccessible component.

Technical standard
Our current accessibility target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Accessibility is an ongoing process, and this statement is not a legal certification or a guarantee that every third-party service will be barrier-free.
